What Our Patients Are Saying

The Dental Implant Procedure

There are several reasons an adult may lose one or more teeth. The most common causes include tooth decay, injury, and gum disease. In some cases, individuals may also be born without certain permanent or temporary teeth. Regardless of the cause, tooth loss can significantly affect both the appearance of your smile and your self-confidence.

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding healthy teeth become more vulnerable due to the lack of proper support to keep them stable. Although dental implants offer a long-lasting solution for missing teeth, they may not be suitable for everyone.

To find out if dental implants are right for you, it is important to schedule a consultation with a dentist and discuss your specific concerns. At Valencia Advanced Dentistry at Copperhill Smiles, we are committed to helping you restore both your smile and your oral health through advanced dental implant solutions.

Dental Implants at a Glance

Dental implants are widely regarded as one of the most effective and preferred options for replacing missing teeth. A dental implant is a titanium prosthetic that is surgically placed into the jawbone, where it serves as a stable foundation for a dental crown, or artificial tooth. Over time, the implant bonds with the jawbone through a natural process called osseointegration, allowing it to function and feel much like a natural tooth.

Although placing a dental implant requires minor surgery, the procedure is minimally invasive and generally comfortable. With the use of advanced technology and anesthesia, your dentist ensures a smooth and pain-managed experience.

Types of Dental Implants Your Cosmetic Dentist May Recommend

Based on your individual dental needs and personal preferences, your cosmetic dentist may suggest one of the following types of dental implants:
  • Endosteal Dental Implants

Endosteal implants are the most commonly used type of dental implant. They are surgically placed directly into the jawbone and serve as a secure foundation for one or more artificial teeth, such as dental crowns.
  • Zygomatic Dental Implants

Although less common, zygomatic implants may be recommended if you do not have enough jawbone to support endosteal implants. Instead of being placed in the jawbone, these implants are anchored into the cheekbone, also known as the zygomatic bone.
  • Subperiosteal Dental Implants

Subperiosteal implants are placed beneath the gums but rest on or above the jawbone, rather than being embedded into it. This option is typically recommended for patients with insufficient or unhealthy jawbone who are not candidates for bone grafting procedures.

What a Dental Implant Placement Procedure Involves

Dental implant placement is an outpatient procedure completed in multiple stages. Because each phase requires adequate healing time, the entire process may take several months from start to finish.

Depending on the location of the missing tooth, the extent of damage, and the health of your gums and jawbone, your cosmetic dentist may recommend different surgical steps. However, a typical dental implant procedure generally includes the following stages:

  • Extraction of the Damaged Tooth

If a decayed or infected tooth is still present, your dentist will remove it to create space for the dental implant.

  • Bone Grafting

In some cases, bone grafting is necessary to strengthen the jawbone before implant placement. Since the jawbone must withstand significant pressure during chewing, it needs to be strong enough to securely support the implant.

  • Dental Implant Placement

After the jawbone has been properly prepared, the dentist will surgically place the dental implant into the bone. This step is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, ensuring minimal to no discomfort during the procedure.

  • Abutment Placement

Once the implant site has healed and the implant has fused with the jawbone, a minor procedure is performed to attach an abutment. The abutment serves as the connector between the implant and the dental crown or artificial tooth.

  • Placement of Dental Crowns or Artificial Teeth

About two weeks later, you will return to your dentist for the final stage of treatment. During this visit, the custom-made crown or artificial teeth are securely attached to the abutment. Depending on your needs and preferences, your cosmetic dentist may recommend either fixed or removable restorations.

  • They look and feel like natural teeth
